It has been awhile since my last post. I have been to Cripple Creek, CO to Sante Fe, NM and back to Midland, SD. On my way back to Midland I stopped at a “Yes way” gas station to fill up in Martin, SD. It’s a Sunday, it’s gorgeous through the back roads and up Hwy 76. I stop to get gas and my nose leads the way for food. I can smell a wonderful smell come across the parking lot of the gas station. What is that smell? I turn around and see H&H Bar, small building with a sign that would only bring in the locals. Food, beer, games, and pool is listed in plain black letters. Nothing fancy and definitely a local “dive”. I pull away from the pump and creep slowly to the small parking lot of the bar. Someone is leaving right up front, leaving me plenty of room to park.
Do I go in? Am I that hungry? I’m almost back to Stroppel Hotel and do I treat myself to a local bar? Absolutely! I don’t usually feel the need to stop at local bars and try the food, but this place looks busy, looks hopping for a Sunday afternoon, and the smells coming from the building are amazing.
I enter and it’s packed. I sit at the bar and the two women, beautiful, and busy see me come in. Callie, sweet as can be asks if I want food and it might be a little bit. She is tending to a big gathering in the back room. I ask for a menu, ask for a beer, and tell her I’m taking my time so no worries on hurrying. She takes my order and I order a breakfast burger with hash browns.
This was the best choice ever to stop and eat. H&H bar has got some of the best food that comes up fast; even in a flurry of customers. I’m eating and enjoying and an older woman comes out. She looks as though she was done for the day. She comes right up to me and asks, “who are you?” I get I look out of place, I get she most likely knows many from near and far, but what I didn’t realize is she is the owner! Susan talks my ear off, asks me where I’m from, and makes me feel like a local. She is tough, yet sweet. She is tired from work, but looks like she is content, and she’s done for the day! Thank you Susan for a wonderful experience and great food! Definitely stopping by again sometime soon!
